How to choose a perfect teether for my baby?

Baby has a tendency to put anything in their mouth, usually this phase will begin when baby are 4-5 months old - usually called oral phase. In order for children not to enter things carelessly, you can give the teether a bite. Giving a teether not only stimulates the baby's teeth growth, but also overcomes the itching that disturbs the area of the gum.

How to choose a teether that is perfect for my baby?

Good quality teething toys will be durable, BPA-free, easy for your baby to hold on their own, and safe to chew on. Teether also shouldn’t have any hard edges. Some teether are designed for pain relief and play!

Teether is a toy that commonly used to stimulate the growth of baby teeth at the age of 5-6 months and above. Biting teether gives comfort feeling to the baby. Teether generally made from silicon and shaped slim so it is easily bitten by a baby. Before buying a teether, you should consider the following tips:

Make sure the materials are soft and toxic free.

Choose a teether made from BPA free, PVC free dan phthalates free material. Choose a soft teether that is quite chewy. BPA or bisphenol-A is a plastic chemical that is harmful to the body's hormonal system. This is very dangerous for pregnant women, babies and children. Make sure the teether you choose includes the words BPA free in the packaging. Teether is usually made of plastic that is safe for the baby's mouth and has an attractive shape so the baby wants to hold it.

  • Stage 3 teether usually used for babies who already have 2 teeth or more, the teether is denser, but soft when bitten, the texture is more rough, there is even a wavy, teether function at this stage to stimulate further tooth growth.

  • Stage 4 teether is a teether with a texture that is more coarse and varied. This teether is used by babies whose biting ability is getting stronger, because they already have several teeth. In addition to stimulating tooth growth, teether can also trains their motor movements to chew.

Teether also has stages that are suitable to the baby's condition. For babies who have not yet grown teeth, choose smaller and softer teether, don’t choose a teether with rough texture. While teether for 6 month old babies usually has a rougher texture to stimulate tooth growth, such as wood.

Choose a strong teether and easy to wash teether.

When buying a teether, try to hold the teether and then stretch it. Teether should made from strong material, so it doesn’t easy to destroy by baby’s teeth or their magical hand. If the teether was easy to torn, of course it would be easily swallowed by baby, which is very dangerous. Also, make it a habit to wash teether after being used by baby. Wash with hot waters, and sterilize as you clean and sterilize milk bottles and baby pacifiers. Use teether that have Biocote® Antimicrobial technology, it could makes your teether more hygienically clean and reduces the potential of cross-contamination.

Another great product from Grabease ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

Love it!! It’s easy for my baby to hold and the smart design prevents her from putting it too far into her mouth. It seems to act as a teether in addition to being a toothbrush- she chews on it with all parts of her teeth and gums. Grabease has great products!

Perfect for my 2 years old and work really well ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

Bought this for my 2 year old. She absolutely loves it. With it being double sided it's much easier to use than a regular toothbrush. I also think it's easier for her to grip, since it's wider than most toothbrushes, and it is work really well.

Finally! Something that works! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

If my child could tell you what he hated most in his 15 months on this earth he would immediately say “When mom and dad brush my teeth”. Needless to say we were desperate to find a solution so we wouldn’t have a child who lived at the dentist due to cavities. Ta-da! He now not only let us brush his teeth but he wants to do it himself too!! We have to distract him to take it away! Thank you for creating this product to make this process easier!

Love it, but quite pricey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

I tried so many tooth brushes so far my baby likes this the most. He is able to hold it nicely attempt to brush his teeth. I also own the Grabease spoon and fork and like them a lot. The only down side is the price. There should be no reason why these are so expensive.

Nice concept ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

I love the idea of this product & also love the other grabease products. Unfortunately I’m disappointed with how quickly the bristles have broken down. That being said, my toddler still chews more than brushes. Given this fact I think it’s more cost effective to buy packs of less expensive brushes.

3 Rules you must follow when giving first food to your children

There are so many ways to introduce and giving the first food to your children. Proper nutrition should be given to improve the nutrition of your child. Said gastro hepatology consultant pediatrician, Dr. Frieda Handayani any method applied must prioritize nutritional needs to support each stage of different growth and development. Errors in feeding can have fatal consequences on children's nutritional conditions, such as eating difficulties and malnutrition.

"The first time feeding a child, there must be many challenges so we must be patient. But it is a child's learning process that must be passed," Dr. Frieda said it.

3 rules that you must understand when giving your child the first meal.

1. Schedule

Mother can provide healthy food and snacks to children regularly. We recommend do not offer other snacks at meals except drinking.

The meal schedule can adjust by age of the child. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ages 6 to 8 months, the frequency of eating is around 2 to 3 times a day. Meanwhile, at the age of 9 to 23 months, children can eat 3 to 4 times a day.

Maya Product Photo Shoot-217.jpg

2. Environment

Create a pleasant atmosphere when children eat. Also never force children if they refuse to eat, but communicate with them.

The use of gadgets must also be considered. The tendency of children to eat while watching videos from gadgets is now done by many parents in order to let children want to eat. But this is so wrong, parents!!

"Not only not good in terms of psychology, children who are given gadgets are just bothering them to learn about the taste and texture of food," said Dr. Frieda.

Also avoid to give rewards or gifts to children whenever they finish their meal. For example, parents promised them to give sweets after they finish their meal. If children is rewarded with a gift, they not eating because of necessity but because they want a gift. This kind of thing is not good for their development, parents.

Grabease278.jpg

3. Procedure

Prioritize children to eat first and drink after finish meal. If they don’t want to eat and start to turning their head away, crying, and closing their mouth, try to keep offering food again.

But remember, don't forced. Offer food neutral as usual.

"Keep trying for 10 to 15 minutes, and if they till do not want to eat, stop the eating process," said Dr. Frieda.

The process of feeding children, Dr. Frieda said, does require extra patience. Besides being patient, feeding them is also a bonding time with children, a period of learning and loving. Don’t forget to invite them to communicate, for example you can tell a story while introducing food.

5 Best straw cups for your baby in 2021 (Updated)

Choosing sippy straw cups for your baby with hundreds of collection on the market would be a very handful job to do. It can be pretty overwhelming when you’re standing in front of a selection of 30+ sippy straw cups.

But whether you like it or not, it is a must to do job. Why? Pediatricians recommend weaning your baby from the bottle (of breastmilk or formula) and switching to a cup at approximately 12 months old in order to support oral appropriate oral motor skill development. Let them exercise their face muscles (lips and jaw), tongue, and soft palate, all of which are connected to speech and feeding.

Before we go through recommendation part, I would like to let you know pros and cons between choosing a sippy cup or a straw cup.

Sippy cup and straw cup pros and cons

Just like with a bottle, baby places her tongue at the front of her mouth to form a seal and suckle while using a sippy cup. For this reason, some pediatricians and speech and language pathologists recommend straw cups over sippy cups. With straw cups, your baby is more likely to learn the new skill of pulling her tongue to the back of her mouth when she drinks.

In addition to learning the proper tongue and mouth placement for drinking (rather than suckling), your baby must also master the hand-eye coordination required to hold, lift, and tip her cup towards her mouth, all while sitting upright on her own. Straw cups offer less practice for these skills because your baby can successfully drink from them while still reclining and sucking, and not sitting upright or fully tipping the cup to her mouth.

Now we go to recommendation part.

It turns out that preparing educational toys for children doesn't have to be expensive and luxurious right? Interesting recommendations for young moms. Good luck!!

Baby's first solid food

Babies needs to be given their first food gradually after having exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of their life. After baby is 6 months old, breastmilk alone is unable to meet the nutritional needs of the baby, so baby needs to eat foods other than only breast milk, and it’s worth the mess!

Sign of babies are being ready to eat solid food

The baby has indirectly shown signs that he is ready to be given solid food near the age of 6 months. Such as being able to hold his head, able to pull out his tongue, has begun to look interested in food, look at food at the dinner table, and may try to reach the food in front of him. If the baby has shown such signs, it means they’re ready to be introduced to their first solid foods.

There is a right moment to introduce baby food, a unique timing for every child. If parents introduce too early, baby may will stop breastfeeding soon, and they will not get the benefits of breast milk. If introduced too late, they will be more difficult to take solid food, so it may caused them a shortage of vitamins and minerals.

What is the first food parents should give to baby?

First Food

Start by giving them soft food or mashed food. The choices can be rice porridge, or baby cereal. Occasionally give boiled vegetables and fruits, such as potatoes, carrots, yams, apples or pears. Soft fruits such as melons may also be given to him.

Even so, giving varied types of food is still recommended as it is feared if only giving rice cereal, babies are at risk of excessive arsenic exposure.

Finger food

After getting used to eat soft foods, you can give him finger food. Finger food is a food that is cut to the size of a finger so that it is easily grasped and eaten by the baby. You can give banana or avocado pieces as finger food. Initially the baby may learn to hold food with his own hands and learn to put it in his mouth, but later at the age of 8-10 months, usually the little one can consume finger food in slightly larger portions.

Advanced food

If the baby can successfully eat the two stages above, it means that they can consume advanced foods that are more complex. Foods like chicken, meat, noodles, bread, rice, and boiled eggs are safe to give to them. But make sure the food is cooked till it soft to make it easier to eat and avoid choking.

Drink from a cup

Give the baby the experience of drinking directly from an open cup or glass after he is six months old. This way will help his ability to drink as well as good for tooth development.

Eat three times a day

At first, baby may eats enough twice a day, but after they are 8-9 months old, they can start eating three times a day. Later at the age of 12 months, they are used to eating three times a day plus light meals. In addition, from the age of 12 months, babies can drink cow's milk. Choose full-fat dairy products because children under the age of two need extra fat and vitamins for their physical development.

The right things to do while giving baby’s first solid food

Parents can apply the following methods to give complementary feeding to your child without interfering with the natural development of her body.

Give your baby a meal when their mood is happy and not too hungry, tired, or fussy.

Let your baby enjoy touching and holding food.

When a baby shows an interest in eating alone, give him a chance to eat with his own hands.

Mother must be patient, do not force the baby to eat.

Keep breastfeeding baby or milk-feeding for at least one year.

Accompany them while they’re eating.

Make sure the food given to the baby is clean, fresh, and not hot.

10 Milestones in first year of baby’s life

Many important developmental stages have been achieved by babies in first year of their life. Babies throughout the world have the same stages of development, but they may experience it at a different time. So, what kind of abilities that will they develop from the age of 0-12 months?

10 Milestones in first year of baby’s life

1. Smile

After two months of staying up and crying, at around 2 months baby finally able to smile at you. When hearing familiar voice of their Mommy and Daddy or when you tell them your jokes, they will response you by smiling.

2. Laugh

If you are getting bored with the baby's cry, be patient a little because at the age of 4 months, the little one will make another sound, they start to laugh! When you play "peek-a-boo", tickling or putting on a funny face, then come great laughter.

3. Sleep well throughout the night

Their ability to sleep well throughout the night may be a baby milestone that many new parents await. Normally, babies can sleep calm overnight at 4-6 months of age. Please be patient, parents!

4. Sit alone

At the end of the fifth month, usually baby is able to sit with help, either by leaning on a pillow or holding it with his own hands. The little one is usually only able to rise from sleep and sit alone at the age of 7 months.

7. Eat with fingers

At the age of 9-12 months, babies have developed good control of their hands and fingers so they will begin to pick up various small objects. 9. Walk

This is a milestone that most parents take memories by recording it, usually you can predict when baby will walk by paying attention to their ability to “creeping”. But not all babies can walk before their first birthday, the normal range is between 9-17 months.

The importance to let your baby self-feeding, it's worth the mess

As a new parents, you might being really protective of you kids. You are afraid of choking issue, so you may always feed your children. Of course I know every parents might have different perception about self-feeding for children, let we discuss the importance of allowing children to be in charge of their own feeding and learn how to listen to their bodies, it is also called BLW (baby-led weaning).

This article will let you know why you should stop feeding them and let your little one self-feeding, and yes, letting them self-feeding definitely worth the mess.

Self-Feeding-Skills.jpg

Why baby self-feeding is worth the mess?

Learning to eat alone (self-feeding) must be trained early so that the child is active in various things later. When a child is able to grasp something it's good to let them eat by themselves so that his fingers are stimulated.

Children who learn to grab food and put it in their mouths are expected to be more skilled in using their hands for other positive activities such as coloring or drawing.

The more they learns to hold, after a long time their fine motor muscles or small muscles become stronger. When they gets bigger, we stimulate him to self-feeding using a utensils according to his size, and then he gets more skilled, which means he gets stronger again.

What is a good age to start self-feeding and why?

Once you introduce solid food, your child might show signs of wanting to feed himself. Just wait until your child is able to pick up food and get it into their mouths successfully, whether using their hands or utensils, then it is the right time to begin the transition to self-feeding. It is an important stage of children to self-feeding. Self-feeding involves lots of feeling, squeezing and dropping food. It might seem messy, but it’s one of the ways your child develops fine motor skills like learning to hold a spoon.

Read also: 3 Rules you must follow when giving first food to your children

Start baby self-feeding with..

Finger foods

In BLW method there is mentioned about letting your children observe food by their own. Soft, bite-sized pieces of food that are easy for baby to pick up and mash between his gums or teeth. Like a small piece of soft fruit or soft and cooked vegetables like potato or pumpkin. You can add more if they’re finish their meal or if they’re drop it.

Start introduce solid food to them while they are 6 months old, the important thing is finger foods are not their main nutrition resource, by that time we encourage you to keep breastfeeding your baby, but, let them observe foods. You will find out that when they have interested in foods, then it would be easier to let them self-feeding.

Using utensils

Technically there is no right or wrong about giving children use utensils to self-feeding, as long as utensils was made for children, like Grabease. The self-feeding journey with hands is very important as it helps a baby to experience texture and it is all important for the gag reflex. Utensils then bring to the table the next developmental step in learning about mealtime etiquette and motor development.

54446757_364846740772280_6466995801585268259_n.jpg

Why Grabease is the best fork and spoon to start with?

Let’s talk about traditional children’s cutlery. They look very much like adult cutlery, just scaled down to a small size. However, if you put a traditional child’s spoon next to a baby’s arm, you will see that a “child size” spoon is actually the same length as a 12-month old’s forearm! If adults used the same proportions in utensils when we ate we’d be eating with a serving spoon.  So, traditional children’s utensils are too big.

Read more: Self-feeding utensils, Grabease or Bumkins silicone chewtensils?

Then there is improper hand-hold in “child size” spoon. Due to the long handle, a child can’t use a proper vertical hand grasp to use them, so they hold these handles with a fist. This doesn’t encourage fine motor development.

54731909_2241240635919112_265264967764969859_n.jpg

There really is only one solution and that’s Grabease. They encourage vertical and horizontal hold because of the short ergonomic handle and have been endorsed by Occupational Therapists due to this revolutionary feature.

If you're interested in learning more about the transition to utensils for self-feeding baby, check out this.

Last but not least, messy eating and playing with food are normal parts of your baby’s development when they’re learning to eat independently. It’s normal for your baby to drop or throw food on the floor. If you react when they do this, he might think it’s the start of an exciting new game. One way to handle this is ignore it. Pick up the food calmly, without a fuss. Or you can leave the food on the floor until they finish their meal so you just have the one clean-up.

Needless to say, teaching children self-feeding is often a long and messy journey. Just let the food fly!!

Build learning kids by let them play with building blocks

Building blocks have been around for more than decades and most of us had played with blocks in our growing years. Building with blocks provides one of the most valuable learning experiences available for young children. Block play stimulates learning in all domains of development, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional and language, most importantly allow a child to free imagination.

Researchers proved that children who play with blocks when they are three, four and fives years of age will do better in math, especially Algebra in middle school.

Building blocks for kids at different ages

There are several types of baby blocks in the market today. How do I know which kind of blocks play is suitable for my kids? We do believe that not all blocks will work for all age groups. There is a natural progression of blocks play and introducing infants and toddlers to block play is invaluable.

Blocks play for 3 to 12 months old

When babies are first introduced to blocks, they learn how to hold them, how to feel, they attract by blocks’ eye-catchy color, that is great for tiny hands that are just learning to maneuver things. Then start to carry them around. They will experiment with how blocks may sound when they fall, or when they bang them together. Through block play a young child’s expressive and receptive language is being expanded by learning words.

Recommended blocks play for 3 to 12 months old

Dena toys are blocks play, they can be used as a teether, which is great for those itchy gums and does also help the child to learn to eat independently, since it teaches the movement of the hand going to the mouth. While the different colors encourage visual stimulation and color recognition.

Actually, Dena toys are the ideal toy for all stages of a child’s development.

Blocks play for 2 to 3 years old

The aim now is to develop the mind; to let it imagine, visualize, explore and create. A two and three year old usually plays alone or near other children and are beginning to engage in pretend play. They are learning concepts such as sorting, ordering, counting, one to one correspondence, size and shape.

Recommended blocks play for 2 to 3 years old

Wonchi soft building blocks, with colorful visual experience and comfortable touch, extend the five senses of the play experience. They are durable, easy to clean, and perfect for carrying out, also allows kids to have fun and gain knowledge in a safe environment. It can also stimulate creativity, enhance team working ability and develop imagination.

The blocks are light and soft but very sturdy and children can easily build with them. This is very important in building blocks, since if the blocks tumble too often they could frustrate the child thus leading to a negative emotion rather than a positive one.

Blocks play for 5 years old

At four and five children’s blocks play is more experienced, developed, balanced coordinated and organized. Constructive play involves play that is more open-ended and exploratory. Children begin to combine structures to make more complex buildings.

Recommended blocks play for 5 years old

Plus-plus construction blocks play, the concept of Plus-plus building blocks emphasizes the simple use of two plus signs, but can make a variety of changes. At the same time, if you want to teach your children to change from flat design into 3D design, you can also use Plus-plus to easily convert this concept. They have two size, the small size is 2 cm, while bigger size is around 5 cm, suitable for one to four years old kids.

Things you must know about baby teething and teether

Teething can be one of the least fun parts of early development. Symptoms vary, but some baby can lose sleep because of teething, cry in pain, or develop rashes from drooling while teething. You may start to think about giving your baby teether. Then you will asking yourself, when I should give your baby teether? Does baby really need teether? What kind of teether I should choose?

Things you must know about baby teething and teether

Does baby really need teether?

Teeth growth can cause pain and will cause a lot of difficulties for babies who feel sick, as well as their parents who took care of them. Your baby may cry a lot, saliva production will be more than usual, sometimes they also look nervous and fussy. Some babies even can’t sleep at night. However, there are some babies who don't seem to be affected by this condition.

Baby teething toys are beneficial, not only for helping relieve a baby’s pain, but also for helping a baby’s cognitive development. A teether allows a baby to develop motor-skills. A baby must see the toy, grab it, and guide it into the mouth in order for it to be chewed on. So as a good parents, you need to go through different teether reviews before purchasing it.

When you should give baby teether?

If you notice your little one trying to chew on everything in sight, it may be time for some teether. Teething can start as early as 3 months old and as late as 14 months old. When your baby starts teething and which teeth develop first depends on family history and genetics.

Two lower front teeth are usually the first teeth that appear. And followed by two upper front teeth. Most children will have 20 teeth before they are 3 years old.

What kind of teether I should choose for my baby?

Good quality teething toys will be durable, BPA-free, easy for your baby to hold on their own, and safe to chew on. Teether also shouldn’t have any hard edges. Some teether are designed for pain relief and play!

Stage 1 teether for infants aged about 4 months, teether function to stimulate dental growth.

Stage 2 teether for babies around 6 months old, the shape of the teether is denser, its function is to stimulate the next tooth growth.

Stage 3 teether usually used for babies who already have 2 teeth or more, the teether is denser, but soft when bitten, the texture is more rough, there is even a wavy, teether function at this stage to stimulate further tooth growth.

Stage 4 teether is a teether with a texture that is more coarse and varied. This teether is used by babies whose biting ability is getting stronger, because they already have several teeth. In addition to stimulating tooth growth, teether can also trains their motor movements to chew.

Matchstick Monkey, solution for baby's teething pain

Matchstick Monkey launched in December 2016, I found it is the best solution for baby’s teething pain. Matchstick Monkey’s founder, Katie Windridge, is mommy to Minnie, Coco and Bailey. At that moment, Minnie was having a bad teething pain, she already had 3 teeth even before three months old. Katie could not find anything to massage Minnie’s sore gums without getting bitten. Minnie had always obsessed with monkeys, thus Katie think if there is a thing that could reduce Minnie’s teething pain and it is a monkey, Minnie must be really happy!! This is when the Matchstick Monkey was born.

And we understand that making decisions on the best products to buy can be difficult when there’s so much choices. Yes, teething products are designed to do the same thing, they all come with slightly different features which can be incredibly confusing for parents! Thus I will proudly tell you why I love Matchstick Monkey so much.

Does baby really need pacifier?

Every parents have their own perspective about pacifier, some said it is necessary for babies and they said pacifier can help soothe babies. Some said it may cause nipple confusion, or even cause a mother’s milk supply to drop because the baby is sucking at the breast less, then may would harm their teeth development.

Does baby really need pacifier?

Some babies able to soothe themselves, some need pacifier to help them feel calm. Most babies have a strong sucking reflex. Some babies even suck their thumbs or fingers before they're born.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents need to wait until your baby is breastfeeding well and your milk supply is established in order to prevent nipple confusion, your baby’s 1 month birthday should be about right. If your baby is nursing well, gaining weight, and has a routine feeding schedule, you can start earlier. Give baby the pacifier after their regular feedings to make sure they gets all the nourishment they needs.

The benefits of using a soother

Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows giving infants a pacifier at night helps reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). “While it’s not as significant as sleeping position or avoiding blankets, some studies show that sucking on a soother does help prevent SIDS,” says Saunders. It even helps if your baby spits it out as soon as she falls asleep. The only time pacifiers should be restricted is if a child is prone to ear infections. “Sucking on a soother may make it difficult for the ear tubes to drain properly,” says Saunders.

As a new parent, comforting your baby is one of your highest priorities, and you may find a pacifier very helpful.

Also, a pacifier habit is easier to break than a thumb-sucking habit. After all, you can dispose of a binky!

Once your child is two or three years old, it’s time to phase out the soother to avoid adverse dental effects. Underlying changes to the jawbone usually don’t start until around age four, and the hard palette isn’t fused until about ages six to eight. But if you worry, you can talk with your dentist to confirm.

Hi Lollacup, straw cup for your baby! Bye-bye to sippy cup!

Do you know that some of babies found it so difficult to sip from traditional sippy cup instead of straw cup? That's when the idea for the Lollacup was born — a straw cup with all the qualities: easy to use, easy to clean, safe (BPA/BPS-, PVC-. Phthalate-free, etc.). When babies learning how to use Lollacup straw, it helps babies to develop the muscles in and around their face and mouth which are helpful for biting, chewing and talking.

Hi Lollacup, the modern straw cup! Bye-bye to sippy cup!

The beginning of Lollacup

We all know kids like to play and we like to let them play wild and free. We like simple toys that stimulate their imagination, creativity, and can help them develop future skills.
